                        CHILD LABOUR

BOY WORKING IN A TOBACCO FACTORY

Child labour refers to any work that subjects a human being below the ages of 18 years, to economic exploitation or hazardous working condition, or interference with the child’s education, or is harmful to the child’s physical, mental, spiritual, moral or social development before adulthood.

In  Nigeria, child labour is said to be hiding under the umbrella of poverty , were parents give unnecessary excuses for not providing the basic needs for their children to experience a wholistic development.

It is important to know that, any  work that harms children’s well being and hinders their education, development and future livelihoods, is child labour

Any work which, by its nature and the way it is carried out, harms, abuses and exploits the child or deprives the child of an education is child labour.

Looking at Hazardous child labour:
Hazardous child labour is any work that is dangerous or unhealthy by its nature, because of the conditions attached to such work ( factory- work ) which  could result in a child being killed, injured or made ill as a consequence. This type of work should be out of bounds for all children under 18 years and should be addressed as a priority in the fight against child labour.

According to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) along with the International Labbour Organization No_138 and 182 (1973), were 155 member states ratified.

It required that member states establish and pursue policies to effectively abolish child labour. The convention defines a minimum age for admission to employment or work, which shall not be less than the age of completion of compulsory schooling, so that the children can develop physically and mentally before entering the workforce.
